The rich history of Fender™ guitars begins with the Telecaster™, affectionately known as the Tele™.

This indispensable workhorse of an instrument has endured virtually unchanged for more than 60 years as a testament to elegant simplicity in form and function.

The Telecaster™ was developed in 1950 by Leo Fender. One of the longest-running production models in history, it has been modified only slightly since its early 1951 debut.

The Tele™ is known for its ability to produce both bright, rich, cutting tone or mellow, warm, bluesy tone, depending on the selected pickup. This feature is what made the guitar so important to the evolution of country, electric blues, funk, rock and roll and other forms of popular music.

Additionally, its solid body allowed the guitar to be played loudly as a lead instrument with less of the feedback hollowbodied instruments tended to produce at volume.

Even though the Telecaster™ has been around for more than 60 years, and more sophisticated designs have been coming out since the early 1950s (including Fender’s own Stratocaster™), the Tele™ has been in production continuously since its release.

Over the years, many guitarists have played the Telecaster™. In the early days, country session musicians were drawn to this instrument designed for the “working musician”. These included:

• Merle Haggard
• Chet Atkins

The Telecaster™ also has a long and significant role in both Blues and Rock music. Some of the early proponents of the Tele™ included:

• Steve Cropper (original member of Booker T. and the M.G.’s, and session man extraordinaire for Sam and Dave, Otis Redding and countless other soul and blues acts.)

• Keith Richards
• Andy Summers (The Police)
• Bruce Springsteen
• Albert Lee (whose extensive use of the Telecaster™ earned him the nickname of “Mr. Telecaster”)

The clear acrylic miniature bass guitar on the left in the photo above is a completely custom model for an individual customer. The miniature guitar on the right is a replica of a Dan Armstrong guitar. The late great Dan Armstrong was a legendary guitar repair expert and an innovator of acrylic guitars in the 1960s, which is why Ron Wood and many other guitarists and musicians have played his unique instruments.

It’s that time of the year when almost too much is going on in the world of rock guitarists to keep up with it all. So to cover as many bases as possible, we will just briefly mention news of interest along with links to follow for the complete articles or more details.

Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne, along with other celebrities, are involved in the first annual Rock & Roll Roast to benefit the MusiCares charity, which will take place on the opening night of the 2012 NAMM Show in Anaheim, CA. (AXE HEAVEN® is a proud member of NAMM.) The roastee of the private event to be held on January 19 is Zakk Wylde of the Black Label Society.

We have recently written several posts about the list of the 100 Greatest Guitarist Of All Time in Rolling Stone Magazine. That list was recently updated, with several notable changes, the first of which is the very impressive and long list of voters, which certainly adds credibility to the selections. It is hard to argue with the results when they are based on the opinions of so many talented and well-respected musicians and members of the music industry.

The first thing we noticed about the revised Top 100 is how high Derek Trucks is on the list. At #16, he ranks between Neil Young and Freddie King, which is a very impressive showing based on a vote of long-time veterans and his peers. In the photo of Derek on his page within the list, he is playing a sweet-looking red guitar. We feature a similar Pete Townshend red miniature guitar replica collectible.

When you’re hot, you’re hot! And so it goes for the fearless Flea and his frenzied original Red Hot Chili Peppers bandmates Anthony Kiedis and Chad Smith. After more than a quarter-century, these guys are still as strong as ever. They are currently touring in Europe, with newest member Josh Klinghoffer on guitar, and they recently announced a North American tour, which begins in January 2012.

Regardless of the line-up of the Chili Peppers at any particular time since the group was formed in 1983, this band has moved to its own groove – a blend of too many styles to accurately list – and set the airwaves crackling with a special sound that makes you feel alive and connected to the street beneath your feet.

The foundation of the unique sound that is the Chili Peppers, upon which the soulful voice of Kiedis floats, is the bass playing of Michael “Flea” Balzary. If anything, these guys are funky, and that funk starts with the bottom notes that are flung from Flea’s bass guitar like few other rock musicians fling notes (or bounce around the stage).

The band’s innovative, integrated, and infectious sound, along with its ability to sell millions of records, is why the Chili Peppers are soon to be inducted into the 2012 class of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Ace Frehley's Biography No Regrets

This seems to be the official season of heavy metal guitarist biographies. On the heels of writing about the new book by Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi, we feel the need to give equal time to the new biography No Regrets: A Rock ‘N’ Roll Memoir by guitarist Ace Frehley, written with Joe Layden and John Ostrosky.

The book, which was officially released on November 1, made its debut at #10 on The New York Times Bestsellers List for hardcover nonfiction. With Frehley’s band having been such a cultural phenomenon in its heyday, much has been written about the subject, including this article from Guitar World Magazine that includes a link to the entire first chapter of the book.

We’ve been longtime fans of Ace Frehley and the other members of his group. The bottom line is that underneath all of the makeup and the costumes, those guys rocked. They were fun to watch, their groove made you move, they recorded an anthem for the ages, and they played some outstanding musical instruments. What more could you ask from a band?
